It’s December and your house on the market. Regardless if you planned to have it sold by now or are just beginning the listing process, if you celebrate this time of year you may need to revamp your decorations a bit. Yes, potential buyers are shopping your house, not your garland. However, the setting you create does make an impact. People are visual by nature and the first impression counts. Many of us go “over the top” at Christmas with lights on timers, trees in every room or an exterior display that can be seen for miles. It is possible that buyers can be put off by your love of the holidays. Some may think you are trying to hide a defect under all those glittery ornaments and bows. What is the best compromise? Follow these tips to help sell your home during the holidays:
- Less is best. Holiday decorations are inviting but keep it low key. One tastefully decorated tree, simple lights on the porch and stockings hung on the mantle are ideal. Embrace the season but don’t scare away potential buyers. Remember, not everyone celebrates or celebrates with the same enthusiasm you may have.
- Do I smell cookies? Who doesn’t love the smell of home baked treats? Inviting smells can be very enticing to a potential buyer. Candles or wax burners work well and also offer accent lighting. Apple cider, sugar cookie and pine are popular scents this time of year.
